Background:

HW to TV to lookup proper references for the National Gallery example;
HW to GB to ask the Getty for other examples instantiating a transfer of custody

Current Proposal:

As part of the homework for issue 516 I was meant to look for the reference for the example about the National Gallery under E10 Transfer of Custody and associated proprties. Joe Padfield has kindly done some detective work on the example but there is no proper reference for it. There is a passing reference on a couple of webpages from an exhibition in 2013 (e.g. https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/research/meaning-of-making/vermeer-and-technique/drying-and-paint-defects) but nowhere near what is needed.

The example may have been fictitious in the first place, or the reference is lost, or we are simply talking about another National Gallery.

In any case, I think George is tasked with finding a different example from the Getty.

HW for issue 516

In the 50th joint meeting of the CIDOC CRM SIG and SO/TC46/SC4/WG9; 43nd FRBR – CIDOC CRM Harmonization meeting, the SIG reviewed HW by GB: two examples from the Getty Provenance Index for E10 Transfer of Custody.

  • the transfer of custody of the work described as “Von der Velden ein Ufer an der See” from Johann Matthäus von Merian to the Auction House Heldevier (Jacob) for the purpose of sale, ca. 1716
  • the transfer of custody of the painting ‘Mrs. Fitzherbert’ to the art dealer Knoedler from Parke-Bernet Galleries (New York, NY, USA) ca. March 1941

NOTE: The problem with the references remains. The system doesn’t allow users to save a link, so we could just cite Getty Provenance Index and the web address for the site and the object seen and the date, whatever the style one goes for. To be worked out by the Editors’ group.

DECISION: Include the examples in the definition. The references to the Getty Provenance Index need to be sorted out and then the issue can close.

Dear all,

In some SIG, I was charged with finding out how to give the citation for the examples given in E10 from the Getty Provenance Index.

This is the preferred Citation style:

Getty Provenance Index®, https://piprod.getty.edu/starweb/pi/servlet.starweb?path=pi/pi.web, accessed YYYY-MM-DD.

Best,

George

Outcome:

In the 51st CIDOC CRM & 44th FRBRoo SIG meeting, the SIG went through the citing information for the examples of E10 Transfer of Custody retrieved from the Getty Provenance Index.

Proposed citation style below:
Getty Provenance Index®, https://piprod.getty.edu/starweb/pi/servlet.starweb?path=pi/pi.web, accessed YYYY-MM-DD

Decision: apply the citation style and close the issue
