Issue 154: Curation Event

ID:
154
Starting Date:
2007-05-27
Working Group:
1
Status:
Done
Closing Date:

Background:

Cristian Emil Ore presented a comment from Jon Holmen about P109 has current or former curator. The comment was about P109 the only direct link link between E39 actor (and subclasses) and E78 collection. The other links P49, P50, P51 P52 and P105 are all shortcuts between E24 physical man made stuff and E39
actor. In fact there is no direct link between E39 (or subs) and
E39 Actor (or subs) except the P109.

The standard is aware of this problem, see below. For me it is unclear what kind of responsibilities a curator has and if it is possible to identify them, I suggest we should make P109 into a shortcut via an activity. In an FRBR setting a curator is not unclose to a editor.

P109 has current or former curator (is current or former curator of)

Domain:

E78 Collection

Range:

E39 Actor

Quantification:

many to many, necessary (1,n:0,n)

Scope note:

This property identifies the E39 Actor or Actors who assume or have assumed overall curatorial responsibility for 9)an E78 Collection.
This property is effectively a short-cut. It does not allow a history of curation to be recorded. This would require use of an Event assigning responsibility for a Collection to a curator.

Examples:

the Robert Opie Collection (E78) has current or former curator Robert Opie (E3)

Martin Doerr in collaboration with Laboratory on Digital Libraries and Electronic Publishing of the DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVE AND LIBRARY SCIENCES of IONIAN UNIVERSITY , mapped DC CD AP to CIDOC CRM. The text for this mapping is the following one:
Dublin Core has developed an application profile for the description of collections (DC CD AP). The records of DC CD AP are semantically related with the DC records that correspond to the type collection. Therefore, the proposed methodology could be followed for the mapping of DC CD AP to CIDOC (fig. 4), demonstrating how CIDOC integrates the metadata for collection level descriptions. Most of the DC CD AP paths correspond to the same CIDOC paths described for the type collection, since they contain the same elements. Hence, emphasis is given to elements and concepts that they have not yet introduced.
First of all, we propose the extension of CIDOC with a new activity called Curation Activity, as well as a new property called Curates/is curated with domain the entity Curation Activity and range the entity Collection (E78). With this definition, a collection is the result of a curation plan i.e. an activity; Therefore, there is a need for the introduction of the proposed entity and property. It should be noted that the proposed property Curates/is curated is linked with the property has current or former curator/is current or former curator of (P109) using an IS_A relation.
A Curation Activity is performed following a specific procedure with a particular aim (i.e. subject) and audience. Thus the following CIDOC path is generated: E78(Collection)-(Curates/is curated)-(Curation Activity)-P33(used specific technique/was used by)-E29 (Design or Procedure). The DC CD AP elements Collector/curator and Accumulation Date range correspond to the CIDOC entities Actor (E39) and Time Span (E52) respectively and are semantically linked with the Curation Activity using the already mentioned proper properties (carried out by/performed (P14) and has time span/is time span of (P4)). Furthermore, the DCCDAP elements Subject, Accrual method, Coverage (temporal and spatial) and Audience are linked with the entity Design or Procedure (E29) (fig. 4).

The mapping of DC CD AP to CIDOC/CRM

Old Proposal:

To add to the CIDOC CRM a new activity called Curation Activity, as well as a new property called Curates/is curatedwith domain the entity Curation Activity and range the entity Collection (E78).

Current Proposal:

E87 Curation Activity

Subclass of: E7 Activity
Scope note:

This class comprises activities of managing the preservation and evolution of a of an instance of E78 Collection, following some implicit or explicit curation plan.

It specializes the notion of activity into the curation of a collection and allows the history of curation to be recorded.

Items are accumulated and organized following criteria like subject, chronological period, material type, style of art etc. and can be added or removed from an E78 Collection for a specific purpose and/or audience. The initial aggregation of items of a collection is regarded as an instance of E12 Production Event while any activity concerning the evolution, preservation and promotion of a collection is regarded as an instance of E87 Curation Activity.

Examples:
  • The generation of the Robert Opie Collection
  • The exhibition of Medieval and Renaissance silversmiths and goldsmiths at the Wallace Collection museum
Properties: P147 curated (was curated by): E78 Collection

P147 curated (was curated by)

Domain: E87 Curation Event
Range: E78 Collection
Quantification: many to many, necessary (1,n:0,n)
Scope note:

This property identifies the E78 Collection or collections which are subject of a curation activity following some implicit or explicit curation plan.

This property allows a history of curation to be recorded and involves activities for taking care of an item or items of a collection. For example, a Curator organizes a painting exhibition of modern works in a gallery and cares to promote it for education purposes.

Examples:
  • The pioneering activities (E87) by the Wallace Collection museumcurated a Deaf artists collection (E78). ( to be discussed )
