CIDOC-CRM is an event-centric model. It centres descriptions not around the things, but around the events that connect people, material and immaterial things in space-time. It is based on the view that the historical analysis can be seen as an analysis of events involving participation of people and things, meeting each other and thus creating history. In order to be able to represent this history, CRM models how things, ideas, people, time and places are all inter-related through common events.
CRM's top level entities and relationships between them cover the general notions that form the way we conceptualize the reality. For this reason, such a conceptual model provides an integrating framework for describing multidisciplinary historical knowledge.
Thanks to the object-oriented structure and methodology it supports a semantically rich form of representation that can be easily extended in order to be used for knowledge produced in various domains rather than only for cultural documentation.
The CIDOC CRM is an international standard (ISO 21127:2006) and is maintained by the CRM Special Interest Group (SIG).
